As we crawl further into September, we’re inching closer and closer toward the coldest months of the year. The sky is already staying darker longer in the mornings and getting darker faster at night. That means it’s time to get out your comfy clothes. Soft t-shirts, snuggly sweaters and socks plus your favorite beanie can come back into rotation. But that also means it’s time to turn the heater on again and watch your utility bill climb higher and higher. It can be hard to keep your mind from scrambling about how you’ll be able to afford the jumps on your bill, but there’s a variety of ways you can combat that and set yourself up for future winters in the process.
Get a Tune Up
Before winter gets started it’s a good idea to start with a few preliminary and preventative actions that will hopefully keep your utility bill from going up over the course of the winter instead of staying fairly steady. We recommend changing the furnace filter and having a once-over done of your duct system and filters just to be sure that is everything in tip-top order so you don’t have to fret about your heat disappearing into the cracks within your attic. Ensuring that your systems are all tuned up once a year will save you repair costs down the road.
Pay Attention to The Ducts
Your duct system and ventilation system is of the utmost importance. Your heater can blaze with the fire of a 1000 suns and if your ductwork is dropping all that heat in the attic, you’re hardly getting anywhere. Keep your ductwork in good order or else you’re wasting that cozy heat and you’re unnecessarily increasing your heating bill. Climb up next to your ducts and inspect them. Invest in some cheap duct wrap and wrap all of the seams up to make sure there’s no air escaping where you don’t want it going.
Sometimes, the best way to drop your heating bill is to upgrade your heating unit. A high-efficiency heating replacement unit can make all the difference in how much energy you’re using to heat your space. Investing in a high-end heating appliance could make your heater work less hard and make your house more earth-friendly.
Call Your Utility Company
Sometimes, the phone operator representing the utility company has had a good day and they’re willing to cut you a break. If you live in a deregulated area, you’ll be able to hunt down a better rate and you can even try and force them to match another utility company’s price. This can give you a major break and make it so you only have to update and repair your heater when it’s rattling and cranking, rather than when you’re looking for a reason as to why it’s not being as efficient as you were hoping it would be.
We’re here to help you prepare for the brutal Centennial winters coming down the road.
